The Department of Theatre Arts at Howard University invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track faculty position in the nationally renowned Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Musical Theatre program. This is a full-time, one-year appointment for AY 2021-22. The position will work with the faculty of the Musical Theatre Program, and faculty in the other four concentrations, to continue to build on the Program's many strengths in voice, dance, and acting for the musical theatre artist.

As a historically Black private university committed to developing distinguished, historically aware, and compassionate graduates we seek an artist/educator with training and experience that will support our diverse student body and increase the incorporation of inclusive and forward-moving pedagogies in our classrooms. The ideal candidate will demonstrate success in teaching and guiding students who come from a diverse personal, educational, artistic, and socio-economic background.

Duties primarily include teaching private voice, acting and musical theatre history to BFA musical theatre majors.

In addition to teaching the technique surrounding the voice for musical theatre, there is an expectation that the studio time includes ear training, musicianship, and song interpretation. Classical repertoire and technique are also a part of the studio training. The position also requires the candidate to teach courses based in musical theatre acting techniques, auditioning, and the history of musical theatre. Participation in student recruitment and other faculty activities is expected.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for remaining current in the field with regard to evolving styles, techniques, and pedagogy in voice and acting.


Preferred Qualifications:

MFA in Musical Theatre or related discipline completed by date of employment.

Teaching experience at the university/college level.

Ability to serve as a pianist for class and production work when needed.

Experience as an artist, performer, musical director, or director on Broadway or in major Regional Theatre venues.

POSITION: Howard University’s Department of Theatre Arts invites applications for a full-time, 9-month faculty tenure-track position beginning August 2021, subject to final budgetary approval.

Howard University’s Department of Theatre Arts is dedicated to the continued growth and development of African American theatre by training competent professionals in the fields of Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre, Arts Administration, Theatre Technology, and arts research. Grounded in the foundation of the African Diaspora experience, the Department is committed to fostering an environment that encourages research and experimentation in performance, thereby pioneering innovative forms of drama and dance that best enable artists to speak in their own distinctive cultural voice.


RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities include:

· The delivery of undergraduate classroom instruction including introductory level and upper-division courses in arts management;

· Advising and mentoring arts administration students;

· Advising and mentoring arts administration students;

· Participation in service to the department, college, and University;

· Continued research/creative/service work in the field;

· Contributing to building an inclusive learning environment for a diverse student population.


QUALIFICATIONS: Required qualifications include:

· Ph.D. or terminal Master’s degree in non-profit or Arts Administration or a terminal degree in a related field, and experience in Arts Administration

· Five or more years teaching experience in colleges or universities and seven or more years professional experience in non-profit organizations, theatre companies, etc.

· A willingness and desire to collaborate within the department, the College, and throughout the university, and the greater community.

· Candidates with teaching and/or professional experience in fundraising, finance, special event planning and execution are especially welcome.
